DUAL SETS OF LAWS
To sell cars, gas, paving, ambulance chasing, car insurance, etc., aggravated assault becomes tailgating.
Last clear chance, but for the needs of the car & oil cos., insurance rental cos., car dealers, car body shops, insurance salesmen, etc. wouldn't exist--it would still be murder culpability offsetting some negligence.
Licensing of recent immigrants who've never driven or taken driving lessons, senile persons, etc.

SOCIAL
Many Japanese businessmen cos. are paid "hardship pay" for working in the U.S. in large part citing our difficult transportation environment (rough/tumble car culture).
Our children grow watching alternating car dealer and ambulance-chaser spots thinking that's normal, sensible, intelligent!?

HISTORY
At original Earth Day demonstrating youngsters told their skeptical parents that absent a return of meaningful rapid transit, they would someday be either shut-ins or dangerous drivers. That has proven true.
National City Line, affiliated with Yellow Coach, in turn controlled by Geyhound Line, at the time it controlled by General Motors, first acquired, then ripped out trolley lines and torched trolley cars ubiquitously in the U.S. In 1932, Alfred Sloan (GM Chmn.) created the National Highway Users Conference, an alliance of tire, oil, car, etc. co.'s to benefit through cooperative action.

ENVIRONMENTAL
One cannot see the beautiful mountains along California's coast even during a "good-air-quality" day, EXCEPT RIGHT AFTER A RAIN.
Satellites verify greenhouse-gas effects--Comparisons of data obtained from instruments that orbited Earth more than 25 years apart provide direct evidence that the planet's greenhouse effect increased significantly between 1970 and 1997.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
Buckminster Fuller launched clinical psychology with the observation that putting too many mice in a cage, the mothers begin to eat their young. The lalk of meaningful mass transit creates paranoia generally (not the severe, homicidal? paranoia represented by road rage.
ECONOMICS
Car cultures are self-defeating in the most immediate ways. Intrinsic inefficiency yields inability to maintain roads, even the cars.
The U.S. has never been free from recession and had a balanced budget absent a healthy mass transit system and/or low oil prices.
We imported 33% of our oil during the '79 oil embargo. Today the figure's 55% fast approaching 60% due to the maturity of the really important domestic oil producing provinces.
When the bear market in oil finally ends (historically overdue--now 20 years old), should oil simply test the '79 per-barrel price high, the domestic import bill for oil alone (just imports, just oil) will rise approximately $ 9 Billion per month. That is, the total oil import bill will approximately be over $12 Billion per month.
Being a consummate car culture, high fuel prices will bring recession/the Fed hostage to the imports (qty) X high price, the U.S. budget a domino after the import debt. HIGHER int. rates will defend the dollar. (also, State Dept. hostage to 55% import vs. 33%, '73--next oil embargo will have tremendous clout)
Ecuador's departure from OPEC left it 100% politicized, save Venezuela, but it one of the 2 FOUNDING members.
There are a million car accident-caused injuries annually.
It costs about $1 per passenger-mile to own & operate a car in the U.S. vs. .05/rapid transit (X trillions of miles annually).
70% to 90% of police man-hours are lost to traffic control, depending on the jurisdiction.
'30's depression occurred during rapid increase in car dependence combined with initial growth phase, price of gasoline; U.S. never enjoyed balanced budget (Federal or trade) AND prosperity absent cheap energy. basis of Ravi Batra's findings (only depression-correlating variable--concentration of wealth)
Though "downstream," 1/3 fueling stations vs. '73 will create far greater psychlgcl impact during crisis.
The car culture not only benefitted the likes of McDonald's (TM), but the supermarkets at the expense of the neighborhood family produce stand and grocery; thus, even the internet will never appreciably save on driving costs.
The 2d week of Nov., '99 Saddam proved singularly able to force up oil's price.

THE 2d WEEK OF FEB., '00, SADDAM BOOSTED OIL'S PRICE OVER $30/BBL WITH A 10% IRAQI PRODN CUTBACK. OPEC back in the driver's seat and Saddam vying to make the Saudis look like U.S. puppets. Using the oil production weapon appeals to the angry inadequates--but the inadequacies are a by-product of trying to increase population by instilling mascucline insecurities (making straight men afraid of being wrongly ferreted out as gay--linked below).
N-E-W:
"Economides: US gas price spikes expected:"
BR> (combined, with no mass transit, high imports, down goes the dollar , and, concomitantly, up go the interest rates, in a viscious cylce of weakening private and public revenue leading to greater debt leading to higher interest rates despite the weakening economy, and back to declining revenue.)
SELF-DEFEATING
unchecked, can't get from point A to point B; as to self-defeating economics, inducing a weaker currency and higher interest rates, and a weaker economy in turn, and a weaker dollar in cycle with that, renders it difficult even to properly maintain roads.
Gridlock causes: drunkenness;
deafness (music blared to cope;)
simple-mindedness (alternating car dealer/ambulance chasing commercials; notion car culture makes sense, etc.;) for example, tailgators in U.S.-made cars are on their way toward removing their own noses--their air bags deploy on 8 mph impact Also, as to simple-mindedness, note Al Bundy's (C) early-70's Plymouth Duster was supposed to be a "wieniemobile." That car, and its sister, the Dodge Dart, were under 2 tons, apx. 250 hp (rockets). The "performance cars" people shell out for today are the soapboxes mandated by post-'79 embargo economics. The SUV's, at apx. 13 mpg vs. the 25 the average American was working with, are simply the naive blow-off of cheap energy, the aftermath of the overreaction to OPEC's initial success. "No-fault" insurance is simply an attempt to make an uneconomic system sustainable.
Inflexibility of transportation, many people planning trips, shopping around gridlock MULTI-DISCIPLINARY
Cars never were the least bit practical in snow. In a car culture such as in most of the U.S., one doesn't know if he/she will have transportation tomorrow.
ADAPTING TO CAR CULTURES FOOD
Fast food's major growth is surely rooted in the car culture. Self-Respect is Happiness Compassion Incorporates Self-Assurance
